2014 Niepoort Navazos
Niepoort joined Equipo Navazos to elaborate this white wine, made 100% with Palomino Fino grapes, coming from one of the historic Albariza vineyards, in the Spanish region of Jerez de La Frontera. On its sixth edition, this wine was produced, following the same rigorous criteria of the best winemaking techniques of 200 years ago. The grapes were fermented in bota, with indigenous yeasts that impregnate the vines and the vessels, following ageing under a layer of flor for eight months. As one of Niepoort’s marks, the tradition and the future, blend, in a fantastic and original wine.
VINIFICATION
After a terrible 2013 vintage, 2014 came back to excellency in the Sherry Region in general, and specifically in the historic vineyard located in the Pago Macharnudo Alto whose grapes give birth to this wine. The grapes were gently pressed, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeast, in old (40 years old) American oak casks, called bota. The temperature was naturally controlled, due to the small dimension of the vats (600 l). The wine aged for 8 months with the fine lees under flor. The casks were filled up to 5/6 of their capacity, so that yeasts could develop.
TASTING NOTES
Navazos-Niepoort 2014 is a wine that has kept an unusual fruity background despite the influence of flor yeast. With Jerez typical aromas of limestone and chalk dust notes, it’s a wine full of character, vibrant, fresh and mineral, showing the pure expression of the chalky soil. Full bodied but not heavy, dry but not aggressive. An amazing gastronomic wine!
